Compared to them, we are pansies.Warning. I was alone as I walked through the area so I was able to feel the sadness of those who gave their lives so fearlessly. The other exhibits for the Korean and Vietnam men and women of Alabama was very touching. The outside exhibits (tanks) brought fear to me and their large power. I wish there had been markers to show you which way to go and identify the areas. The stealth blew my mind at it's size the USS Alabama was huge and had a small video to sit down and listen to a few stories. There was a smaller "confederate" submarine outside the large hangar area just WoW. They were a good crew that survived WWII. It gave even more respect for those who had to know every nut and bolt on that vessel before being allowed to come aboard. The USS Drum submarine was open to "squeeze" through and the though of sleeping in a cot above or below a torpedo was mind boggling. It was a warm day and the little restaurant / gift shop was closed but there were vending machines available to purchase water or soda. We finally stopped AT the USS Alabama instead of waving at it as we passed by. For $15 ($13 for veterans) it is worth it!! If you are in the area, be sure to stop in. We stopped to visit the Korean and Vietnam memorials on the way out. There is availability for groups and Scout Troops to arrange for overnight stays. The boys and my husband climbed up further on the ship to see things and they were absolutely thrilled with the entire visit. The battleship itself was huge and I am sure we didn't see everything as we got a little turned around at times. I would also do the 2 ships first and save the indoor attraction for last as it's cooler inside. I recommend going when they open as it's less crowded and temps are more bearable. The sub didn't take a long time to go through and they have both air conditioned as much as possible which was a plus. The indoor attractions were very interesting but the favorites of course were the USS Drum Submarine and the USS Alabama Battleship. We took our 2 teenage boys and arrived just after it opened. After seeing this ship in the harbor as we passed through on a previous trip, my husband wanted to visit on a recent return visit to the area.
